First up, make sure that your vehicles is actually compatible. Does your 2015 Hyundai Sonata have a navigation system and an 8 inch touch display screen? These were available on upper trims like Sport, Eco, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T. If yes, gather your supplies and set out.

You will need:

  • A computer, internet connection and USB drive with at least 1 gig of space
  • Basic log-in information for MyHyundai (this is either your password, if you are already registered, or your name, address, and Vehicles Identification Number (VIN) if you haven’t)
  • An Android phone (because why else would you want Android Auto?)
  • Your 2015 Hyundai Sonata
  • Time (between one and two hours)

Go online to MyHundai at www.hyundaiusa.com/myhyundai, and log in or register. Once you have registered, you can find the 2015 Sonata in the drop-down menu on the top left. Once you are at the 2015 Sonata page, you can select downloads, and the Android Auto option should appear to download. Double click on the newly downloaded software, and it should run a program to automatically put the program on the USB drive. You will get confirmation when the download is complete. Woot, you have the information!

With us so far? Keep reading or check out this video from Hyundai which will walk you through step-by-step.

Now on to actually getting that info into your vehicle. Park your 2015 Hyundai Sonata and start the engine. The vehicle will have to run the entire time of the update, which will take about 40 minutes (plenty of time to make weekend plans or check your email). Make sure you have gas in your car and are parked in a well-ventilated area (please, no closed garages).

Connect the USB drive to your Sonata. Press the setup button by the radio controls. Then scroll to System Info on the touch screen, tap that and then tap “Update”. The software update should begin automatically, and when it is done you can enable Android Auto. You can find the app’s on/off options in the Setup menu under Connectivity Settings.

After that you can plug in your (Android) phone, and it should automatically ask you to download Android Auto. Do so. And…you’re done and ready to test drive your newly integrated  Hyundai and smartphone.

Everything clear as mud? You can also make an appointment with your local Hyundai dealer and let them take care of the upgrade for you!
