When do the rear wheels turn with four-wheel steering?

Four-wheel steering is an uncommon feature in the automotive world, but it is certainly not unheard of. Many luxury sedans have utilized such a feature to improve turning radius and make for smoother highway lane change transitions. We’ll explain how all that works.

At low speeds the rear wheels will turn opposite the front to make for much tighter turns which is especially useful in parking lots. At high speeds, for subtle maneuvers, the wheels will turn in the same direction to allow for smoother lane changes that don’t disrupt the balance of the vehicle.

How will the Silverado use all-wheel steering?

This we do not know for sure. We can say with certainty that it will use four-wheel steering at low speeds for more maneuverability as described previously, but there may be a lot more to it. When hauling a trailer, it could be handy to steer both ends of the vehicle independently, but it could also be counter-intuitive and hard to get used to, so perhaps at low speeds we will only see the common operation of this feature.

As for highway lane change features, that’s anybody’s guess at this point as it’s one thing to apply that tech to a luxury sedan, and quite another to apply it to a truck that may be towing a trailer at 70 mph.
