How Often Do You Need to Replace Your Tires?

When Should I Replace My Car Tires?

Have you ever had to hit the brakes and it felt like it took a little too long to stop? Did you know that an estimated 9% of automotive accidents are related to your tires? The tires on your car, truck or SUV play an important role in performance, handling and safety – which makes it vital that you have quality tires on your vehicle. You may have asked – when should I replace my car tires? We are here to help answer all of your tire-related questions at Broadway by Bergstrom Automotive!

How Do I Know If I Need New Tires on My Car?

The more you drive, the more worn your tires will become and when the tire tread becomes too thin, you risk a tire blowout or loss of traction when on the road – which makes it important to check your tires each month. In general – most brand-new tires have a tread depth of 10/32 of an inch. Tires with a tread depth that is at or below 2/32 of an inch are unsafe and need to be replaced – according to data by the U.S. Department of Transportation. You can expect a brand-new set of tires to last 60,000 to 75,000 miles or about five years. Tire life will vary based on your driving habits.

Here are a few quick and easy methods that you can use to check tire tread depth on your car, truck or SUV.

  • Look for Tread Wear Indicators – Tires have tread wear indicators built into the tire tread and when your tires have worn to the point that you can see the tread wear indicators, it is time to replace your tires.
  • Tire Tread Gauge – Do you prefer to be a bit more precise with your automotive repairs and maintenance? Tire tread gauges are available at most hardware or automotive supply stores and provide a quick and precise measurement of your tire tread depth.
  • Penny/Quarter Test – Want to check tire tread depth on the go? You can use loose change to check your tire tread depth. Take a penny or quarter and insert it into the tread pattern with the president’s head straight down. If you can see all of the president’s head, it is time for a new set of tires.
